13 - Spreckels Lake

Spreckels Lake is one of the larger lakes in Golden Gate Park. It serves as home for the San Francisco Model Yacht Club. (I wonder if they frown on torpedoes?) But even if you decide to pass on the remote control boat scene, there's still fun to be had in this part of the park.

Take the path that enters the north side of the park at 33rd Avenue. Veer right heading southwest toward Spreckels Lake. About 20 yards before reaching the paved road that goes around the lake, turn left onto a large dirt path. Take this path for about 80 yards, then veer off to the right side of the path into a noticeable grove of 10-foot tall trees.

There are a few pleasant grassy areas to choose from in this shady grove. You'll have plenty of privacy here, as there's little reason for people to walk through the grove. The surrounding wooded area is a pretty place to take a walk while you're here, as is the path around the lake.
